We asked Mr. Kenseki Shimizu, the successor of the Takeda Kao style about the idea of spreading the history and culture of kao.
How Kao was established
「Official document signatures were to be signed with a kao through the Taiho law established in 701. Although, Kaishotai was used in this period,as time passed it changed to Soushotai and eventually, kao was a name giving to this font. 」
What can be understood from Kao
「You can read the person’s personality. For example, Nobunaga Oda’s kao spreads widely horizontally, indicating the vigorous pioneering spirit. Since it also serves as evidence that the person itself wrote the letter, similar designs can be seen in the Muromachi and Edo periods when the political situation was stable. On the other hand, it was designed to not be imitated during the Sengoku period, and it can be said that kao reflects the era.」
features For The Takeda Style Kao
「Takeda is a the only child that his father handed down the Edo-ban that just started to spread in the Edo period. Techniques were handed down so that they were not imitated. Such as making a hole in a specific place of the paper and tracing parts of the letter from the back of the paper. This design is considered the influence from The Books of Changes wishing for great health and prosperity for descendants.」
The Idea Spreading Kao Culture
「Kao is a wonderful Japanese traditional culture. In the past, it was an honor for the political and business circles to own one itself. Many people are interested in kao and hopefully you will feel honored to own one yourself. 」
